Places like Smith Mountain Lake State Park, located on the north shore of the lake, and Explore Park allow visitors to enjoy time on the water as well, in addition to miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Explore Park also has a visitor’s center, while Smith Mountain Lake State Park has a great pier for fishing. 

Another popular pastime on Smith Mountain Lake is wakeboarding. Black Water Junction Wake Park is a cable park situated on Smith Mountain Lake that has a three-level pond with two cables for wakeboarders of all skill levels. The family-owned and operated facility also offers lessons on-site. 

Off the water, there are tons of cool places to visit in the Smith Mountain Lake area.  

Stop by Smith Mountain Lake Farm, which specializes in raising alpacas for their wool. The farm offers tours on which you can see the farm’s facilities, learn about and feed the alpacas, visit the alpaca nursery, and see how the farm’s products are made. 

History buffs should check out the Booker T. Washington National Monument. Here, you can see the former plantation where Booker T. Washington, one of America’s greatest thinkers, was born into slavery, then freed by the Emancipation Proclamation when he was nine years old.
