Virginia’s Blue Ridge Beerway

The local Smith Mountain Lake breweries in Virginia’s Blue Ridge are celebrating the growing culture of craft beer with the new Virginia’s Blue Ridge Beerway.  Several of these are minutes from our rentals at Smith Mountain Lake. The region also hosts some fantastic craft beer events throughout the year, which attracts many of the finest breweries from around the country that bring their unique flavors to Virginia’s Blue Ridge. We have a section of our calendar of events that’s devoted specifically to all the beer-related events in the Roanoke Valley in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Our fantastic local Smith Mountain Lake breweries have joined up to create a trail that provides you the opportunity to enjoy some of the great local beer in the region and learn about the process behind making the beer. This self-guided tour is one of the best things to do near Smith Mountain Lake and includes five breweries and is the perfect way to experience the flavors of Virginia’s Blue Ridge and meet the people who are bringing these great beers to life.

Where to Go for Craft Beer in Smith Mountain Lake

Sunken City Brewing Company is located in the town of Hardy, situated along the northernmost portion of Smith Mountain Lake in Westlake Towne Center. Named for the town of Monroe that once dwelled where the waters of Smith Mountain Lake now rest, this brewery is a great place to grab a lager, ale, IPA, or wheat beer.

Hammer & Forge Brewing Co. is another awesome brewery situated just west of Smith Mountain Lake in Boones Mill. Try beers like the Romanov’s Return Russian Imperial Stout, the Kellen’s Kilt Irish Red Ale, the Uncommon Valor American Amber, or the Blue Lakes Blonde Ale.

Chaos Mountain Brewing rounds off our list. Located at the base of Cahas Mountain west of Smith Mountain Lake (the pronunciation of which eventually turned into “chaos”), this brewery features incredible beers of all types, from session beers and Belgians to IPAs and stouts. Try Smokey the Beer, All Rye-led Up, Forged From Chaos, and other creatively named and flavorful brews. This brewery also offers tours of their facilities.
