About the Ranch
Slocum’s Appaloosa Ranch is nestled near Smith Mountain Lake and offers guests the best experience in anything ranch related. From trail riding, lessons, and summer horse camp to just a great overall experience. Slocum’s is the perfect place to learn more about horses. The owners have over 50 years in the horse business.
Anyone interested in a trail ride through the hills and valleys of the ranch in Bedford County must make an appointment. Whether you’ve been riding a numerous times, or it’s your very first experience, or you’re young or old, you’ll enjoy the experience. Trail riding rates start at $25 per hour and $35 per hour and half, per person. We trail 7 days a week, depending on weather and typical trail riding times are 10:30am, 1:30pm, & 3pm Monday through Friday, 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 3pm Saturday, and 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 4pm on Sunday. Remember you must make an appointment and you will be paired with a horse. Cash or local checks only, please.
Horseback Riding Lessons
Horseback riding lessons at Slocum’s Appaloosa Ranch are the best value around. Group lessons are $25/hour and include everything from the basics of riding to more advanced techniques. Private lessons are $40 per hour. They accept riders of all ages.
Every summer, Slocum’s hosts a Summer Horse Day Camp that takes riders of all skill levels and teaches them about owning and riding a horse. Campers are assigned a horse for the week and learn the basics of horse anatomy and terms for riding and care. Campers will be riding their horse daily and will participate in games, trail rides, and lessons to hone their skills. This opportunity gives campers hands on experience that includes grooming, tacking, feeding, and horse handling skills. The camp is only $150 per person for ages 8 and up; this is by far the best value for what you get!
