Smith Mountain Lake State Park, VA is a popular family and dog-friendly park. The main beach area, you can park at is a sandy beach, that offers lifeguards in season. The triathlons each season begin and end here at this point in the park. The water here is easy to wade out in and moves onto deeper water for those that want to swim.
The dog friendly beaches are located off the trails. Park your car at a designated area and take a hike on any of the many trails and you will see the natural hard sand beach, with smaller foot trails to them. Please keep your dog on a leash, even if they want to chase those sticks in the water.
The state park, aside from being dog-friendly and great for toddlers or swimming, offers many conveniences. Picnic tables with grills, covered pavilion areas, a concession stand, playgrounds, fishing piers and the lakes best boat launch, canoe and paddleboard rentals, jet ski rentals and more are all near the beach. The beach has approx parking for 50 cars) and is located at the end of the main Smith Mountain Lake State Park road.
There is a state park entry fee, or you can use your yearly passes if you have one with the State of Virginia. We thank you for using the park, it is a wonderful hiking, biking, paddling and beach destination. This is our area’s best natural resource. When the round is done, step inside and savor the many flavors waiting to please ranging from chicken wings and pizza to burgers, chili dogs and fries upon request.
