Explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, VA

First thing’s first: where does the Blue Ridge Parkway start? Many visitors to the area don’t realize just how large the parkway is and assume that they will be able to drive the entire road. The parkway starts from the southern tip of Shenandoah National Park’s Skyline Drive in Virginia. In total, it stretches 469 miles, over the state line into North Carolina. So while you probably won’t be able to drive all of the parkway, you will be able to take advantage of the sections that are closest to Smith Mountain Lake.

Visit Mill Mountain Park

Mill Mountain Park is one of our favorite parks in the area! It’s a bit of a trip, but worth it if you’re already planning on exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway. The park spans 568 acres and has plenty to do. Make sure to visit the Discovery Center, which features a beautiful wildflower garden, interactive exhibits, and reptile enclosures. The Mill Mountain Zoo is another must-see. Admission is just $9 for adults and $7 for children ages 3 to 11. Above all else, make sure you stop and see The Roanoke Star. It’s a lighted star perched on top of the Mill Mountain and is considered an icon in the area.
