It’s one of the most popular landmarks at Smith Mountain Lake, and it’s about to get a facelift.
Starting September 5th, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a four-month resurfacing project on Hales Ford Bridge. A temporary stoplight was recently installed to help ease the flow of traffic as the two-lane bridge will be whittled down to a single lane for the duration of the project. However, there is a 10-foot width restriction for the lane and any vehicles wider than 10 feet will have to find an alternative route.
In addition to resurfacing, crews will also work to rehabilitate the underside of the bridge. This portion of the project is scheduled to be completed in May 2018.
Hales Ford Bridge connects the Franklin County and Bedford County sides of Smith Mountain Lake. It’s located near Bridgewater Plaza, which is a favored shopping and dining hot spot amongst residents and tourists.
