Fireworks are perhaps the best part of the Fourth of July—bright and beautiful, dramatic and literally explosive, nothing else captures the monumentally historic declaration of America’s Independence. When the late summer sun finally sets, it’s time to break out the red rockets and blue booms for a fabulously patriotic celebration!
Virginia was extremely important as a commercial center in colonial America, and one of the earliest colonies settled by the English. It’s no surprise, then, that Virginians make sure to go all out for the 4th of July Virginia! If you’re in Huddleston, here’s where to check out the bursting stars and streaking stripes:
Can’t wait for the Fourth? Then don’t! Moneta is celebrating early, seizing the weekend date for the late-night fireworks. About ten minutes north of Smith Mountain Lake if you take Highway 608, in downtown Moneta, there will be a big birthday party for America. Food and alcoholic beverages will be available, along with activities to help the kids have fun until the sun sets. If not watching your kids, head to the stage and enjoy some live music! The fireworks start at 10 p.m., setting the sky alight. There is an admission fee, with proceeds going toward the Moneta Volunteer Fire Department.
Another celebration will be held in Parkway Marina on the eve of the historic signing. At Parkway Marina, an early 4th of July Virginia celebration will be raising funds for Saunders Volunteer Fire Company (admission is $10, with free parking). The event is a family-friendly smorgasbord of festival favorites, including food, live performances, kids’ rides (including the lovely 1950s carousel), and, at 10 p.m., fireworks! The Marina is very easy to find, just five to twelve minutes south of Smith Mountain Lake on highway 626. If going, the event organizers politely ask not to bring any alcoholic beverages or outside food—some fabulous food vendors will be on site!
