Sunken City Brewing Co is a 25-barrel, 4-vessel brewpub located in the Westlake Towne Center off of Route 122. This lake-themed brewery cost more than $2 million to build and includes a fermentation room, a brewhouse, a tap room, a canning facility, and an outdoor beer garden. The brewmaster Jeremy Kirby was trained at a prestigious beer institute in Berlin, making this brewery a must visit for any beer enthusiasts. They have a selection of flagship beers as well as seasonal and limited releases. The brewery is open Thursday from 3 – 9 p.m., Friday from 3 – 10 p.m., Saturday from 12 – 9 p.m., and Sunday from 1 – 6 p.m. They have live music most Friday nights and Saturday afternoons.

Another one of the best things to do in Huddleston on a Rainy Day is to visit The Bridgewater Plaza. It’s full of stores, restaurants, and entertainment, making it a great place to spend a rainy day. You can shop at one of the plaza’s specialty shops and boutiques, and if you’re looking for fun for the whole family, the plaza has an arcade. The Fun-N-Games Arcade has more than 60 games, from classic video games to brand new high-tech games. The arcade is open seven days a week during the summer and on the weekends during the winter.
Hickory Hill is one of the oldest wineries on Smith Mountain Lake. The vineyard has been making their own wines in Moneta for more than 30 years. Their indoor tasting room is located inside the 95-year-old farmhouse, where the wine is crushed, fermented, aged, and bottled. Their wines have won many awards; their most popular is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon. During the fall and winter their tasting room is open on Saturdays from 12 – 5 p.m., and if they aren’t too busy you can request a tour of the winery.

Spending a weekend in Huddleston, VA, along the scenic shoreline of Smith Mountain Lake? With so much to see and do, it can be hard to know where to begin. Fortunately, whether your ideal getaway is hiking to incredible views in the Blue Ridge Mountains or relaxing and doing nothing at all, you will find that spending 48 hours here is just enough to excite you and allow you to experience the best Huddleston VA things to do.
While the lake is the main highlight of the region – its hundreds of miles of shoreline and secluded coves are perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing – we like to start our visit with a drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway to the incredible panoramic vistas at the three mountaintops known as the Peaks of Otter. The drive affords incredible views of the deep forests, and the visitor center is an excellent spot to take in the vistas, whether or not you opt for the 4-mile hike to the summit of Sharp Top (though steep, it is well worth it!). Afterwards, head down to Smith Mountain Lake and your favorite swimming hole for a refreshing dip, or rent a kayak, canoe, or fishing gear and hit the water for an afternoon of fun in the sun!
As the second largest lake in the state, there is plenty of space to let loose and unwind on the tranquil waters of Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Why not rent a powerboat from State Park Boat Rentals and try your hand at tubing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding? All of their gear – from the boats to the inflatables – are Coast Guard certified and ready for adventure. Launch from the convenient boat ramp at the state park (open 8:15am ‘til dusk) right across the street, and you are on your way!
Another one of the best Huddleston VA things to do is to visit The Landing. From country cafes to fine dining on the lake, there are plenty of options to enjoy your meals during your stay at Smith Mountain Lake. If romance is in the air, The Landing boasts incredible views of the lake and stylish décor with a delicious menu of contemporary American fare bursting with Latin flavor. Try the Peruvian ceviche with a glass of crisp white wine, then nosh on the Lobster Spaghetti with a decadent glass of red wine. Hey, you’re on vacation. For more casual fare, The Landing also has a neighboring pub, or you can head on over to Waller’s for live music and equally stunning lake views. On the flip side, you can opt to explore the local markets and stock up on fresh produce to cook your own feast in your fully stocked gourmet kitchen in your luxury lakeside cabin. The choice is yours!
While 48 hours may not be enough time to fully enjoy Smith Mountain Lake and this beautiful region, it is certainly enough to get you hooked. When you do, just remember that Smith Mountain Lake Properties has a year-round selection of premium lakeside cabins and condos, perfect for weekend getaways and extended vacations in this scenic outdoor playground.
