Visit the Virginia Museum of Transportation

The Virginia Museum of Transportation was originally called the Roanoke Transportation Museum and focused mainly on the city’s rail history. After over a decade in operation, the site was reimagined as an attraction that showcases the vast history of all types of transportation. Due to the massive size of many of the pieces on display, most of the museum is outdoors. Be sure to bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes and check the weather before heading out!

The museum is divided into three collections: Rail, Road, and Air and Space Transportation Exhibits. The Virginia Museum of Transportation admission prices range from $10 for adults to $6 for children, so this is definitely an affordable day trip!

Rail Transportation Exhibits

The Rail portion of the museum is the largest portion of the museum. It features everything from “The Railyard,” which features the largest collection of diesel locomotives in the South, to “African-American Heritage on the Norfolk & Western,” which highlights the experiences of the African-American men who worked for the Norfolk & Western Railroad.

Road Transportation Exhibits

This section of the museum includes cars and other vehicles from nearly every decade of the 20th century as well as a display dedicated to one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers, Curtis Turner.

Air and Space Transportation Exhibits

Learn how Virginia has shaped technology in “The Wings Over Virginia Aviation Gallery.” You’ll also be able to read about the Jupiter Rocket. It was first launched in 1956 and helped forward space travel and safety.

Attend Some Virginia Museum of Transportation Events

Before you head out to the museum, check the calendar to see if you can attend any of these fantastic annual events. From Racin’ and Roddin’, the museum’s invitation car show that showcases drag cars, to the annual Train Lover’s Day, there are plenty of chances to celebrate everything to do with transportation!
