The Crooked Road is a scenic driving route in Southwest Virginia that spans 330 miles and the Smith Mountain Lake Festivals, a network of 9 heritage music venues and 60 music festivals. During early to mid-June each year, the entire Crooked Road celebrates the Mountains of Music Homecoming with concerts and events in various cities and towns across the region. Being a part of Franklin County, Smith Mountain Lake falls into the East Zone of the Crooked Road.

The Crooked Road’s Mountains of Music Homecoming is a 9-day event that ends on the 3rd Saturday of June every year. In 2018, the dates for the event will last from June 8th until June 16th. During the event, national and international artists will perform in genres ranging from bluegrass and gospel to traditional dancing. There are also opportunities to learn about traditional methods of music making and the folk lifestyle, such as picking and singing.
Many of the events of the Mountains of Music Homecoming will take in the nearby town of Ferrum at the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum (20 Museum Dr., Ferrum, VA 24088), just a short drive from Smith Mountain Lake. There are also a number of other towns with venues within driving distance, including Floyd, Blacksburg, and Stuart.
