Smith Mountain Lake Pirate Days
Every year there’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19th, but that’s just a single day. Smith Mountain Lakes Pirate Days is a four-day festival that takes place every July. Events are family-friendly and range from pirate trivia at Jake’s Bar and a pirate battle with live music to Pancakes with Pirates at Mexico Viejo and Waffles & Wenches, also at Jake’s Place. There’s even a celebratory pirate’s ball, as well as a pirate costume contest and an art exhibit/open house with special treats for the kids.
Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival
Each fall, visitors and locals of Smith Mountain Lake gather to celebrate wine. Area wineries come with their finest for you to sample. There are other vendors offering candles, clothing, handmade crafts, and more. The weekend also features live music from local and national artists. Participating wineries include Mattaponi Winery, The Homeplace Vineyard, Rockbridge Vineyard & Brewery, Castle Glen Winery, Am Rhein’s Wine Cellars, and Prince Michael Vineyard & Winery, and many others from Virginia. In addition to the locals, the festival also features wines from Bottles & Bites wine shop in Mariner’s Landing, some of which are from outside Virginia’s borders.
Smith Mountain Lake Chili Festival
Get ready to turn up the heat at Smith Mountain Lake, even while the seasons have changed and the weather is a bit cooler. The residents of Smith Mountain Lake and the surrounding area will be out to compete over who makes the best chili. When you’re here visiting in early November, make sure the competition is on your list of things to do to experience local flavor – figuratively and literally. This year’s event takes place at Bridgewater Plaza on November 6 and runs from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., with tasting from noon to 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person and children under 5 are free with a paid admission.
Sinkland Farms Pumpkin Festival
Every fall from the end of September through October 31, Sinkland Farms holds its annual pumpkin festival. Take a hayride out to the patch to see pumpkins, gourds, and squash in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Pick your own pumpkin to take home and decorate for Halloween. Get lost in the corn maze, visit with farm animals, or take a ride on a horse or pony. New for 2021 is the kid’s zone, featuring a barrel train ride, giant slide, kids zip line, and plenty of games to keep the kids busy. There is local live entertainment, and beer and wine for the over 21 crowd. Come back another day for pig racing, or to try your hand at axe throwing or finish visiting all the food trucks offering local flavor. Make sure your plans include a Friday so you can catch a show in the Fall Friday Night Concert Series from 7-10 p.m. Festival hours are 4-8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, Saturdays 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m.
Gross Orchard Apple Harvest Festival
Every year on the third Saturday of October, Gross Orchard celebrates its annual fall apple harvest. Located in nearby Bedford, it’s a short trip to score some delicious fresh-picked apples as well as the other produce the orchard offers. Come pick apples right from the trees or sample other apple delights, plus crafts, games, jams, cider, rides, an auction, apple butter making, and more.
