Join the Booker T. Washington National Monument in celebrating Juneteenth, June 16th! The event commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery: General Gordon Granger issued General Order #3 to Texas on June 19th, 1865, which freed enslaved peoples. The resulting celebrations became known as Juneteenth, and now you can join the historic celebration yourself with a free gospel concert, food vendors, children’s activities, and living history demonstrations. Relive the moment Booker T. Washington experienced emancipation with the Living History Guild! There will also be tours of the Booker T. National Monument, guest speakers, and more. The event starts at 11:00 a.m. at 12130 Booker T. Washington Highway, Hardy, VA 24101, and ends at 4 p.m. Entry into Juneteenth is free!
