Mariner’s Landing Attractions
When you’re looking for your next relaxing break, add some fresh mountain air and a serene lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Smith Mountain Lake has all of that and more to make your next respite as rejuvenating and full of fun as you like. There are several Mariner’s Landing attractions to keep you busy throughout your stay, and you may even need to make another trip to experience everything the area has to offer. Ask about pet-friendly units so your furriest family members can have some mountain relaxation along with you.
Smith Mountain Lake
When you come to a lakeside town, you’ll want to spend some time at the lake. Enjoy the mountain air and just sit on the shore and watch the calm waters or slide into your swimsuit and dive into the lake. The lake offers plenty of opportunities for swimming, boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, sailing, fishing, and just about any other water activity you can think of. You can also rent gear and boats.
Virginia Dare Cruises & Marina
Spend some time out on the water learning about the area. Sit back and cruise as the knowledgeable captain will narrate the cruise as you pass by the house on the private island, one of the oldest condo developments on the lake, an antique carousel, osprey nests, and much more. You’ll also cruise over an underwater bridge before arriving at Smith Mountain Dam, the dam that created the reservoir that is Smith Mountain Lake. There are rates for adults and children under ten, as well as cruise-only and cruise with dining options.
Booker T. Washington National Monument
Booker T Washington was born a slave in April of 1856 on the 207-acre farm of James Burroughs. Visitors to Smith Mountain Lake and the surrounding area can come to the old farm to see where the famed adviser, author, and speaker spent his early life before the Civil War. Step inside the 14’ x 16’ log cabin where Washington spent nine years of his life and wander the surrounding grounds.
Smith Mountain Lake Community Park
Spend some time together at the 37-acre park and its family-oriented facility perfect for swimming, fishing, and family recreation activities. Open from dawn until dusk year-round, the park features a partially covered handicap accessible fishing pier with seating, picnic shelters including grills, playground, restrooms, and hiking and jogging on the two-mile trail. There is seasonal beach and swimming access, and lifeguards are on duty during the season. Visitors can rent stand up paddleboards and kayaks, or just splash around in the water together.
Hickory Hill Vineyards
This activity is for the adults of the group to fully enjoy, while the kids tag along and see a working wine vineyard. Stop in to the vineyard’s gift shop, where you can purchase wines by the bottle. Wines by the glass are available to be consumed on-site in the vineyard’s picnic area. Choose from chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon or Franc and many others that proudly wear the Hickory Hill Vineyards label. The vineyard offers a selection of Boar’s Head cheeses and meats to accompany your drink, or you can bring your own delicious bites. Please do not bring your own alcohol, as it is against Virginia ABC regulations. Picnic area reservations are not required but may come in handy in the event of poor weather or a group larger than six plans to attend. Pets on leashes or in carriers that have a current rabies vaccination are welcome in the picnic area. Proof of vaccine is required for the pet to be admitted, and the Sunset Saturdays event is a no-pet event.
Sunken City Brewing Company
The 25-barrel, four-vessel brewhouse has a tasting room and pub, retail store, and beer garden where you can enjoy their flagship beers like Steemboat Beer, Dam Lager, and Red Clay IPA. Seasonal selections include Crooked Road Cream, Surfside Wheat, and Tartan Tent. You’ll find your favorite after you taste each one. If you’re wondering how it got its name, the “Sunken City” of Monroe lies about 300 feet down. Curious locals and tourists come by the thousands each year to view the bygone city and its mark on the area.
